Visit the “castle in the country” just north of St. Croix Falls on Hwy 87.  You’ll be able to spot Chateau St. Croix Winery from the road as it’s regal castle looms large among the pastoral views of vineyards and farmland.

Visit the oldest state park in WI, right in Polk County! Interstate is Wisconsin’s oldest state park, established in 1900. Located along the picturesque St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, the park provides scenic views of the river and the steep-sided gorge known as the Dalles of the St. Croix. The Ice Age Interpretive Center features a film, photographs, murals and information about Wisconsin’s glacial history.  Interstate Park has miles of trails to enjoy!

Did you know that WI has a 1,000 mile footpath that starts/ends right in Polk County? The western terminus of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail can be found inside of Interstate State Park on the Pothole trail. You can walk all the way from St. Croix Falls to the northern county line on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail or follow it as it stretches its way all across the state!

Outdoor recreation and resources are important to the people of Polk County, so it’s no surprise to learn that the founder of Earth Day was born and raised right here in Clear Lake, WI. Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisonsin, established Earth Day in 1970, and on April 22, 2025, we will celebrate 55 years of protecting the lands on which we live.

We have a lot of POTHOLES in Polk County, and we don’t mean on our roads! Over 200 glacial potholes of various sizes can be carved into Interstate State Park’s basalt bedrock. These potholes were drilled by the powerful waters of the Glacial St. Croix River 10,000 years ago. Where water and sand swirled, a pothole was formed. You can see a pothole up close if you visit WI Interstate State Park.

Are there really grizzly bears in Polk County, WI? You sure can see one if you visit Fawn Doe Rosa in St. Croix Falls! You also can see deer, elk, mountain lions, wolves, and a whole host of farm animals. Don’t miss your opportunity to pet a deer or ride a pony at this family-friendly place to visit in Polk County.

Did you know there are cactus in Polk County? Interstate State Park in Wisconsin is home to the brittle prickly pear cactus. The cactus can be found in a secluded area of the park on exposed bedrock glades. Please take care if you find it as it is threatened in our state!
