Northern Lights in Polk County

Tips to capture the aurora borealis.

Here in Polk County, we’ve had a good share of Northern Lights viewing opportunities over the last few years! While there is never a guarantee, you can always check with NOAA to track the viewing for the aurora borealis.

Here are some tips to help increase your chances of a good Northern Lights experience.

1. Head to a rural area (like Polk County!) where dark skies prevail over city lights.

2. Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. Many people don’t see them right away.

3. Take the photo anyway! Even if you don’t see anything, your camera might. The camera captures far more than the naked eye can see.

4. Use a tripod. Stability is key when capturing long-exposure shots of the northern lights.

5. Turn off the flash.

6. Put something interesting in the foreground (trees, a lake, a person). This can make for distinct photos.

7. Don’t be afraid to use your phone camera! If you have a phone with “night mode,” utilize those settings. If you don’t have night mode, ensure your shutter speed and exposure is set to max.
