Powersports deliver year-round excitement, from summer ATV and UTV adventures to winter snowmobiling across the county’s expansive trail network. Riders can explore hundreds of miles of well-marked, club-maintained routes that wind through farmland, forests, and along lakeshores, with plenty of small-town stops for fuel, food, and camaraderie. With trail systems connecting to neighboring counties, Polk County is a hub for outdoor motorsport enthusiasts where powersports and natural beauty go hand in hand.
All County roads are open all year-round to ATV/UTV’s unless otherwise posted. Please contact individual towns for town road routes.

Sterling Trail/Jack Pine Loop
Closed 7 mile loop in St. Croix Falls — Opens June 1
The ATV trails consist of two gravel closed loop trails open year-round. The Sterling Loop ATV Tail is 5.2 miles and the Jack Pine Loop ATV Trail that links into the Sterling Loop Trail is 13.7 miles giving a total of 18.91 miles of ATV trails. Both trails start at the trailhead located on Evergreen Avenue. From Saint Croix Falls go 15 miles north on US-87, take a left onto Evergreen Avenue for 9 miles.
OPEN for ATV/UTV use. Off road motorcycles are not permitted due to being part of the county forest land.
Trailhead: 3028 Evergreen Ave, Grantsburg – Located 7 miles west of Cushing at the trailhead.

Gandy Dancer State Trail
St. Croix Falls,WI to Lewis, WI — frozen ground use only
Between Dec. 1 and March 31 ATV/UTV’s are permitted to use the trail when the ground is frozen. Snowmobiles are permitted on the trail when there is a 4 inch groomed snow base and the trails are officially open.

Cattail State Trail
Amery to Almena — Open year round
The Cattail State Trail is a gravel trail that travels for 18 miles on a former rail corridor between the communities of Amery and Almena in northwestern Wisconsin. Forests, farmlands, prairies, hills and various wildlife habitats surround the trail, which also passes through the Village of Turtle Lake. Trailhead: Intersection of Center St E & Riverside Blvd, Amery

Sawmill County Trail
Clear Lake to Clayton — Open year round
Located between Clear Lake and Clayton traveling 14 miles. Open year-round to ATV and motorcycle use and snowmobiles when posted.
OPEN for ATV/UTV use. Gravel trail for Off road motorcycles allowed spring/summer/fall

ATV/UTV Intensive Use Recreation Area
Designated ATV courses built on 60 Acres of Forest Land
Located 7 miles west of Cushing at the trailhead. | |
The ATV/UTV Intensive Use Recreation Area is set on 60 acres of Polk County Forest land in the Town of Sterling open year-round. The area features three distinct tracks as well as a sand pit. The Beginners Course, designed for young and inexperienced riders, features banked corners and small jumps. The ATV/UTV Track is designed for more experienced riders, is longer and features larger jumps and ramps. The Challenge Course is for the more advanced riders and features unique obstacles with tires, rip rap and logs. All of the obstacles and features on the trails have bypasses, allowing users to tailor their experience to their comfort level. Recreation vehicle must be registered per DNR.
